Digital technology for Active 2.0
The polluted air that we breathe is source of discomfort and diseases and we live in cities where the pollution rate is always higher.
It is not better indoor: an estimate global view considers that in industrialized countries people passes over 18 hours of the day in indoor spaces as offices, halls, schools, places of meeting and obviously houses.
The latest analytical detections have shown worrying data: even inside our buildings there are the same pollutants present outside, but in higher quantities as you can see from the graphic here reported. The main causes are the finishing materials that release dangerous particles for years, the cleaning products and those for hygiene and personal care, in addition to the external pollution that penetrating indoor.
Why Active? Active is an application on the ceramic surfaces that is performed at high temperature (680 ° c) in Iris Ceramica Group’s factories. Active transforms the simple ceramic slabs in a photocatalytic product that works for the wellness of mankind.
Why Active 2.0? Active 2.0 does not use the simple titanium dioxide, but a new photocatalyst developped in the laboratories of the University of Milan and patented. The titanium dioxide is doped with silver and coated on ceramic slabs with digital deposition.
This allows a better efficiency thanks to the greater homogeneity of TIO2 particles on the ceramic surface (see photos taken to a high-resolution electronic microscope). In addition, the presence of silver allows having a new material that also works under LED lights and shows the antibacterial activity also in the dark.
Self-cleaning with Active 2.0
Among the most researched photocatalytic properties in ceramic floors and walls, self-cleaning (less adhesion of dirt) is the one that most interests designers and architects.
Designing a house with a coating that keeps the colours unaltered and maintenance-free over the years: this is what guarantees Active 2.0.
In the 4 images alongside, the simulation of a real building is reproduced: the White Tower of Lignano Sabbiadoro (UD, Italy), a magnificent building facing the Adriatic Sea. The first image reflects the reality of the clear and clean surface. However, how would you react if, after a few years, the surface turned into an increasingly dark grey due to pollution and fine dust?
Active 2.0 possesses the property called super-hydrophilic thanks to the presence of TiO2 on its surface. The dirt does not adhere permanently and the rain is able to remove dust and dirt.
White Tower - Lignano Sabbiadoro (UD)
The White Tower was built in 2013. Photos taken in February 2018 show that the building has retained its original colour and appearance. In comparison, the concrete side building already shows signs of passing time.
Self-cleaning property is also important in indoor environments. The lower adhesion of dirt allows to clean floors and walls with water and mild detergents avoiding expensive and toxic cleaning products, limiting the presence of polluting molecules in the rooms.
